Accompanying programme

The 28th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2018 will be accompanied by an extensive and varied programme of lectures, guided tours and other educational events. The exhibition will be launched by a formal grand opening attended by the local and international graphic design scene. There will be a lively evening full of music and theatrical performances under the baton of Aleš Najbrt and his performance project called Thomas & Ruhller. Additional events for adults and children will take place throughout the duration of the Biennial.

RETAIL TRAILS

Date: During the Brno Biennial 2018
Location: Centre of Brno
The Retail Trail takes visitors through the centre of the city and points out the positive examples which succeeded in achieving the difficult intersection of interior and graphic design that retail design requires. The trail will have an online and a printed version and it will also be possible to take the walk as a guided tour with the author Veronika R. Nováková and the designer Martin Hrdina.

A WALK – VISUAL SMOG VS RETAIL DESIGN

Can a business work without aggressive advertising? Is quality design a matter of individual taste? Does the cleaning of a public space threaten the freedom of enterprise? Similar questions with good and bad examples of retail design will be addressed by Veronika Rút Nováková, freelance graphic designer originally from Brno, who specialises in branding and corporate identities. She created the UGO fresh juice brand and her clients include the Ministry of Defence, the City of Brno and the Sokol Gymnasts’ Club. The walk starts in front of the railway station building in Brno. The event takes place within the OFF programme of the Biennial of Graphic Design on the subject of Visual Smog vs Retail Design. The programme is supported by the office of the Mayor of the City of Brno’s deputy for the Smart City project.

PAVEL WEWIORA: THE STORY OF 20TH CENTURY OUTDOOR ADVERTISING

Is visual smog a matter of the past decades or is it as old as advertising itself? A lecture on the history of conflict and harmony between advertising and architecture will be given by Pavel Wewiora from the National Heritage Institute. You will learn about how advertising behaved in the interwar period and what was typical for advertising in the 60s and 70s. Look forward to a number of rare period photographs of Brno, documentation of the first advertisements on Public Transport and a discussion on the changes in advertising over the last century.

DOCUMENTARY SCREENING: EVERYBODY NEEDS ADVERTISING

The screening of a documentary on visual smog and debate with the film-maker Dominik Jursa and the activist Matúš Čupka. Dominik Jursa studied documentary direction at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and made the film in 2014. How does he view it in hindsight? How does he observe the development of illegal and aggressive advertising? Does he see the situation as an improvement or a deterioration? The discussion panel will include Matúš Čupka, who has been actively involved in drawing public attention to the problem of visual smog in Bratislava.

A WALK WITH MARTIN HRDINA

The work of the architect Martin Hrdina excels in the precise execution of complex designs combining interior and graphic design. Through his realised projects of interiors and corporate styles for Café Tungsram, Atlas, Pilát, Bistro Franz and the Vietnamese restaurant GO he has considerably influenced the visual culture of Brno’s retail design. The walk will be guided by the architect himself. The start is at Café Tungsram in Kapucínské Sq.

ATELIER BONBON

Atelier Bonbon takes credit for designing the interiors of cocktail and wine bars including the Super Panda Circus, The Bar That Does Not Exist, 4Pokoje or Café and Donut. Their designs are unique in their original ideas and all-inclusive approach. The lecture will outline how the projects evolved from sketches and initial ideas to the problems during implementation and opening.

PETRA DOČEKALOVÁ: TRADITION AND THE PRESENT OF HAND-LETTERING

For a long time hand-lettering used to be an indelible part of retail design, whether it was restaurant menus or hand written shop signs. Although in recent years the poetics of hand-lettering have disappeared from the cities, the situation is gradually turning back to authentic and quality designs. The graduate from the type and typography studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Petra Dočekalová, will present the history of hand-lettering and her own work in the field in comparison with various approaches from abroad. How does a typographer and letter painter make a living today? How is the standard of design at home doing in comparison with designs from abroad? The lecture will be followed by a discussion.

VĚRA MAREŠOVÁ AND LUMÍR KAJNAR: ARGUMENTATION AS THE BASIS OF DESIGN

Both designers will present the case studies of their projects with a focus on communication with clients and positive and negative experiences.
Věra Marešová is the author of the logotype and corporate design of the City of Brno and has completed dozens of other works in the area of corporate design. Lumír Kajnar takes care of brands such as Česká spořitelna, Letiště Praha, Direct pojišťovna, České ragby and the Skaut movement. A typical feature of his work is the fusion of graphic design and marketing towards efficiency and quality end results in the area of communication design.

SYMPOZIUM
Termín konání: 11. 5. - 13. 5. 2018
Místo konání: Kino SCALA
Ve dnech 11., 12. a 13. května 2018 proběhne v univerzitním kině Scala třídenní cyklus přednášek a prezentací světově významných tvůrců a teoretiků designu.
Sympozium je určeno pro grafické designéry, typografy, ilustrátory, pracovníky redakcí, nakladatelství, reklamních agentur, tiskáren, knihoven, manažery, studenty, pedagogy, teoretiky a publicisty z oblasti umění a designu.
Sympozium bude rozdělené do tří tematických celků, které odrážejí celkovou otevřenou koncepci přehlídky a rozšiřují jeho spektrum zájmu o příbuzné disciplíny, především architekturu a produktový design. Ve všech třech tematických celcích se představí přední zástupci tuzemské i světové scény, aby dohromady vytvořili živý a dynamický tok myšlenek vybízejících k vzájemné interakci a diskuzi.

Pecha Kucha Night s názvem Konec dobrý všechno dobré propojuje téma grafického designu s dalšími tématy dotýkajícími se designu a vizuálního smogu. Mezi pozvané hosty patří Braňo Matis s tématem Smrt grafického designu, Marek Pistora a Martin Vácha ze Studia Najbrt, či Veronika R. Nováková, autorka Retail stezky s tématem nechtěné oživení veřejného prostoru.

Mezi realizace studia patří interiér Baru, který neexistuje, Super Panda Cirkus, 4Pokojů, Kafe&Kobliha a další. Vynikají hravostí, nápaditostí a výrazným způsobem obohacují brněnskou retail scénu s tím, že dalece překračujíc její hranice.

KOGAA [RETAIL]
Architektonické studio předvede ukázky vlastních prací a inspiraci z cest v zahraničí. Mezinárodní složení a zajímavá historie se potkává s jejich aktivitami přímo v Brně.

PAVEL WEWIORA (Národní památkový ústav) [VIZUÁLNÍ SMOG]
Vlastní bohatá foto dokumentace z historie reklamy v Brně i dalších městech. Vizuální smog jako záležitost celého 20. století. Vývoj regulací vizuálního smogu a jejich smysl.

VĚRA MAREŠOVÁ [VIZUÁLNÍ SMOG]
Absolventka pražské UMPRUM, která se dlouhodobě věnuje problematice vizuálního smogu. Přednáška bude zaměřená na filozofické otázky vzniku problému, bude následovat diskuze.

PETRA DOČEKALOVÁ [RETAIL]
Přednáška typografky a písmo malířky o retail designu v Čechách a New Yorku. Ukázky vlastních prací a postupů, různá alternativní řešení, netradiční typografie, inspirace
z historie.

LUMÍR KAJNAR
Zásadní problém vizuálního smogu tkví v nedostatečné komunikaci mezi zadavatelem a designérem. Lumír Kajnar je špičkový český designér, který se specializuje také
na komunikaci. Představí případovou studii tvorby kavárny EMA v Praze a rozebere komunikaci, změny i problémy od prvních skic po realizaci.

VERONIKA R. NOVAKOVA [RETAIL]
Retail design cestopis. Jak se pracuje s reklamou ve veřejném prostoru v Belgii i jinde v zahraničí. Ukázky chytrých řešení, alternativ klasické outdoor reklamy, nápaditého retail designu a grafických řešení.

KAŽDÝ POTREBUJE REKLAMU [VIZUÁLNÍ SMOG]
Dominik Jursa, Matěj Čupka
Autor dokumentu o vizuálním smogu Jursa se problematice vizuálního smogu v poslední době věnuje pouze okrajově. Přijede proto diskutovat se svým známým, aktivistou, který se problematice naopak zapáleně věnuje. Jak vidí autoři dokument o škodlivosti vizuálního smogu s odstupem? Přinesla práce své ovoce? Jak se situace změnila? Diskuze na tato témata proběhne po skončení promítání.

CREATIV 60+ BIENÁLE BRNO 2018 – prohlídka a otevřený ateliér
Termín konání: v průběhu června 2018
Místo konání: Uměleckoprůmyslové muzeum
Program určený seniorům se skládá z diskuzní komentované prohlídky mezinárodní přehlídky současného grafického designu i doprovodných výstav k Bienále. Součástí programu je otevřený ateliér s připravenou kaligrafickou dílnou.

V rámci projektu Scalní letňák představujeme české filmy natočené v uplynulých dvou dekádách, jejichž propagačním materiálům vtiskl grafickou podobu Aleš Najbrt

OPENING FOR CHILDREN

The youngest visitors to the gallery cannot be denied a chance to experience the festive atmosphere of the opening of the Brno Biennial. An opening for children with parents that will take place a few hours earlier than the grand opening will explain the subject of the international exhibition of graphic design to the children with various activities illustrating the different forms of graphic design.

WORKSHOP FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

An open week-end workshop for the visually impaired focusing on spatial typography will take place in the exhibitions of the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno.

FAMILY AFTERNOON: WITH THE BIENNIAL AROUND THE WORLD

A weekend programme for the whole family consists of a guided tour for the parents and a creative workshop for children dedicated to the profession of a graphic designer where they will learn about graphic and typographic techniques.

WORKSHOP: POSTCARD FROM THE BIENNIAL

In the workshop visitors guided by experienced lecturers will be able to try out graphic techniques (work with composition, typography, print and luminous paint) and create an original postcard.

SATURDAY STUDIO: PORTO – A PORT OF DESIGN
16/6/2018 10am–12am
On Saturday morning we sail away on a cruise ship to the Portuguese city of Porto. An adventurous voyage through the stormy waters of graphic design awaits us. We will discover that graphic design can attain a multitude of forms which are worth close inspection. We will become acquainted with the cultural and visual identity of the city of Porto. We will try out different graphic techniques and make a practical guide for all discoverers and beginning designers.

ARTCAMP: GRAPHIC DESIGN COMES ALIVE
Date: 20/8 –24/8/2018
Location: Museum of Applied Arts
Summer holiday urban camp for children from 10 to 16 years will be organised with external lecturers from the audiovisual field. The subject of the Artcamp is Motion Design or how it looks when graphic design comes alive. The children will get acquainted with the graphic discipline of motion design. They will try out working with audiovisual technology and learn how to do animation, editing and postproduction.

COLOURFUL AFTERNOONS

The regular Thursday art workshops for children from 2 to 6 years take place in the Biennial exhibition where children together with parents will discover the gallery’s world of graphic design in a playful way.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES FOR SCHOOL GROUPS

A fairy tale-experience programme for children from kindergartens will explain the basics of graphic design. Pupils from elementary schools will become acquainted with the different forms of work of a graphic designer including practical activities and students of secondary schools and universities will be able to take part in guided tours with debates.

Kindergarten – Letter Soup
You think that graphic design is not for children? Don’t be mistaken and come to reveal what is hiding underneath the Biennial of Graphic Design title. We will talk about letters, shapes and colours and we shall see what happens if we mix them up all together. Believe us there is no need to be able to read or write - you can still play with graphic design!

Elementary I – Wrap It Up
Do you know what the profession of a graphic designer involves and that the things you buy have been designed by someone? By linking product and graphic design we will embark on an adventurous journey between surface and space. We will design our own set of labels and packaging that we may use for our favourite products. And beware, we are in for a short trip to Porto in Portugal, so hold on to your hats, we set sail soon!

Elementary II – Atlas of Design
The international show of graphic design presents a cross-section of contemporary graphic works in global context. For better orientation inside the varied world of visual culture we will create our own atlas of design, which will guide us through the exhibitions of the Biennial of Graphic Design and the essential typographic rules and procedures such as fonts or typesetting. With the help of many practical exercises we will learn to work with type as a means of communication concentrating both on its content and the formal aspects.

Secondary – The Biennial: A Guided Tour with a Debate
You can look forward to a critical discussion and evaluation of the different approaches and attitudes towards the contemporary form of graphic design. We will learn about important figures on the Czech graphic scene - František Štorm and Aleš Najbrt. We are also awaited by an interactive lesson in motion design mixing up a cocktail of animation, graphic design, film, video, special effects and new technologies.
